Hatchbacks vs. Sedans: The Pros and Cons
Two of the most basic body styles that have been available in the automotive market for decades are the hatchback and the sedan. Both are extremely popular, and each has its own sets of advantages and disadvantages. But when it comes to making a decision between them, you need to list down the pros and cons. That’s what we’re doing for you.
A sedan is a classic ‘three-box’ body style. The first is the engine compartment, the second is the passenger cabin with four doors, and the third is a lockable trunk area. A hatchback, on the other hand, has only two boxes. The first is the engine compartment, and the second is a combined passenger and cargo space. The hatchback also has a rear, one-piece, vertically opening door which puts the hatch in the hatchback.
Cargo and Passenger Space
The design of the hatchback is more upright than that of a sedan. Because of that, it’s likely to have more height and interior space than an equivalent sedan. This means there’s more room for luggage and more headroom for passengers too.
Fuel Efficiency
Fuel efficiency depends on a number of factors. But overall, sedans tend to be lighter and more aerodynamic than hatchbacks. This usually translates into better mileage, which could save you a lot of money on your daily commute.
Visibility
Hatchbacks have a more upright design. They also have larger glasshouses and particularly, a large rear window. Therefore visibility is better out of a hatchback as compared to a sedan. But, some hatchback rear windows have their own wiper. This means there’s one more part that has to be maintained and could break down.
Security
A sedan’s trunk is a private lockable space that allows valuables to be stored out of sight. Hatchbacks have the space for large and bulky items but, these will be visible through the rear window. And this makes the hatchback a vehicle that’s tempting to break into.
Price and Trim
Sedans are more common than hatchbacks. This means sedan buyers usually find more options. Because hatchbacks aren’t super common, they’re usually available in more advanced trims and may not appeal to a budget shopper.
